T2.4 Sustainability improvement of the silicon photonics value chain
STARLight project covers the entire silicon photonics value chain, starting with development of technologies based on various materials, circuit design and finally a wide range of application demonstrators. In this task we aim to establish a set of guidelines to improve the sustainability of all these elements. The approach that will be implemented will be as follows:
  1. Establish criteria for monitoring and evaluating performance in terms of sustainability for each of the stages of the chain. At the technology level, it can include reduction of the materials, water and energy consumption; alternative materials, technological bricks, processing recipes or tools; reduction of emissions into air or water and solid waste. At design level it could be related to design methodologies, standardization or definition & re-use of existing IP. At applications and product level it could be life cycle analysis, reconfigurability and reparability.
  2. Evaluate these criteria for current developments to set a baseline.
  3. Propose improvement scenarios shared by the different stakeholders to establish a global road map aimed at better sustainability for the entire European silicon photonics community.
  4. Participate in standardization groups like IPSR-I or Photonics21 to bring & share the conclusions of the project.
